Each summer in July, the Virginia Beach Oceanfront gets a little creative and colorful as artists join in the Chalk the Walk ARTsplosion.

On the Boardwalk between 16th and 18th Streets, participants are asked to incorporate an announced theme into their work. All drawings must be completed within 4×4 blocks and family friendly.

Two hundred artists participated in last year’s competition and drawings were evaluated by a panel of judges. The judges score the art on composition, use of color, adherence to theme and creativity. There are three levels of competition including Youth (Ages 12-16), Amateur and Professional.

Trophies and cash prizes are awarded in each division and the event lasts from 10 am to 5pm. All participants must register by 1pm and have drawings completed by 3:30pm. Advance registration is not required and it is free to participate. Artists are encouraged to bring their own chalk.

Children 11 and under are encouraged to participate as well, as the competition designates a separate area for their enjoyment.

The 17th Street Art Festival is held simultaneously to this event in the 17th Street Park. This show is designated to local and regional artists. Various media are displayed from jewelry to sculpture. Live entertainment makes the entire event fun for all.
