Choosing the right Virginia Beach airport could save you a lot of money on your vacation. Especially if you have a larger family and need more tickets. With the cost of gas being so inexpensive, many families drive to VA Beach to really stretch out the vacation budget. However, if you book your flight in advance and shop at different airports, you could get some really good rates and cut down on your total travel time and avoid hearing the phrase, “Are we there yet?”

If flying is your choice of travel and you’re going to rent a car, be sure to check out all the local Virginia Beach airports for your trip. We’ve noticed fares can be much lower with more airline choices when you fly in and out of Richmond, as an example.

Local Virginia Beach Airports:

    • Norfolk International Airport

The nearest airport to Virginia Beach is Norfolk (ORF). It can be the most expensive sometimes as well. My favorite airline there is Southwest. Other airlines include Delta, American Airlines, and United.

The time to Virginia Beach (no traffic) is approximately 25 minutes.

    • Newport News Williamsburg International Airport

The next closest airport is Newport News Williamsburg International (PHF). Up until recently, they were my first choice. However, their selection of airlines is now limited to United Airlines and Delta. So if you’re flying on one of those two, be sure to compare the rates against Norfolk. If the price difference is justified, you’ll only be about 24 minutes further out.

Address:

900 Bland Blvd.
Newport News, VA 23602

    • Richmond International Airport

Last but not least, and probably the least expensive of the three airports, is Richmond (RIC). Be forewarned, if you choose this route, you will add approximately one hour and twenty minutes to your travel time by car. However, sometimes I’ve saved many hundreds of dollars, making it the best choice (that savings could really help feed the family for the entire vacation). There is also a greater selection of airlines as they service Delta, American Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest, United, and Allegiant.
