There is much to do and see in the Virginia Beach area of Virginia. Those looking for some quality museum time may wish to check out the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum. The main exhibits are located at 1113 Atlantic Avenue inside the historic de Witt Cottage.

The building itself may interest history buffs as it was built in the 19th century by the first Mayor of Virginia City and is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register. This location is near the oceanfront of Virginia Beach, making it the perfect stop after a fun day in the sun. The museum is open seven days a week, until 5 p.m. local time, and admission is free though donations are gratefully accepted.

Inside the museum, you will find many displays and artifacts all about the wildfowl that passed through Virginia on their migration paths. These displays include wild birds such as ducks, loons, swans, and geese. Lifelike carvings and decoys are all on display, as well as an art gallery featuring the beauty of the feathered flocks. You will also find a pictorial history of the area of Virginia Beach on the second floor. The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum also has daily demonstrations of Waterfowl carving techniques by local area carvers. They will demonstrate the art and their skills as well as answer questions from the museums many visitors.

There are also two outbuildings to the museum. One is the cities very first library which houses many vintage books from the 1930’s and 40’s.

The second building is the museum boathouse where there are carving classes held for those truly interested in getting hands-on experience. This Virginia Beach attraction is a great kid friendly experience to learn and have fun! This is one of my favorite things to do in Virginia Beach. The gift shop is quaint and offers up hand-carved decoys for you to take home, as well as art, photos, toys, books and even kites in the shapes of birds. Before you go, make sure you take the time to look around the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum garden area.

This seaside paradise has more than 50 varieties of flowers, trees and other plants that enjoy the local salty sea air. There is also a gorgeous bronze sculpture of mallards landing in a marsh in the garden. If you are looking for a fun day of learning or just a day pretending you are an extra in Hitchcock’s film “The Birds”, the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum is the place to be.
