Taking place in two massive airplane hangars filled with period aircraft in working order, Rosie the Riveter: A Spectacular Experience is an action-packed, music-filled journey straight into the heart of WWII-era America. The audience will weave its way through the giant museum space as they follow Rosie and her fellow factory workers and witness their struggles, victories, and unyielding spirit.
Written by Trey Clarkson and produced by ROŪGE: Theater Reinvented, the show brings to life the powerful story of the women who stepped up to keep America moving during WWII through a dynamic fictionalized retelling. Based on in-depth research into Rosie’s story, including archival work at the Library of Congress, the play celebrates Rosie and her crew as they tackle tough jobs and forge unbreakable bonds on the factory floor—surrounded by the very planes they helped build.
Encouraged to dress in 1940s-inspired attire to embrace the era, audiences will move from one scene to the next following the action and experiencing the sights, sounds and activities of a bustling WWII factory, complete with roaring engines, a live swing band, and hands-on riveting stations. The ground will shake as a WWII airplane prepares to taxi off, bringing history to life in the 360 degree space around the audience.
This production is funded in part by the citizens of Virginia Beach through a grant from the City of Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission as well as the City of Norfolk through a grant from Norfolk Arts.
